Local magazine advertising cost
The stock answer, "a few hundred to several thousand dollars," is hand-waving with a currency sign. The truth: community titles are quote-only, every one prices locally, and the only published per-piece print figure in the neighborhood is USPS EDDM Retail at $0.26 per piece.[1] Use that as your floor for what reaching a household costs on paper at all.
How local titles actually sell
- Multi-issue packages by default. Local glossies pitch 3x, 6x and annual commitments, priced per insertion, with the single-issue rate as the anchor nobody is meant to pay. Ask for the per-insertion price at each rung before choosing one.
- Entry sizes. Quarter pages and business-card units open most local books. The fractional folio covers when small space works.
- Alternatives in the same mailbox. Shared-mail print (Valpak's blue envelope, quoted per neighborhood zone by local franchises[2]) and per-inquiry deals through Mediabids[3] compete for the same local budget. Compare them on cost per response, not vibes.
Sanity-check the distribution claim
Community titles are rarely audited, which is where budgets go to die. Ask three questions before signing: printed copies per issue (demand the printer's invoice range if unaudited), how copies reach readers (mailed to named households beats rack drops), and what proportion return unread. An audited book shows an AAM or similar statement[4]; an honest unaudited one answers in writing. Step 06 has the full drill.
Neighbor tiers: regional. Shared-mail sellers: Valpak, Vericast. Mail math: magazines vs direct mail.
