How to advertise in magazines
Buying a magazine page is a process with an order, and the order is where the money is. Kits before rates, rates before negotiation, audits before signatures, tracking before renewal. Ten steps, each a page, each specific. Enter anywhere from search; the folio tags keep you oriented.
Get the document that holds the real rates, specs and calendar, without a discovery call.
Open rate, earned rate, gross vs net: what the card actually signals and how the ladder works.
The asks that move price: first-time rates, added value, position, payment terms. Scripts included.
Unsold pages near close sell for less. How standby and per-inquiry buying works.
Space close vs materials close, lead times by frequency, and the calendar leverage they create.
AAM and BPA statements: verify the circulation before you pay for it.
The insertion order's load-bearing clauses: cancellation, short-rate, positioning, make-goods.
Print creative that pulls: one message, readable offer, response device, correct file craft.
Vanity URLs, codes, dedicated numbers and matched-market tests that make print measurable.
QR mechanics that actually scan, and how to read the analytics as attribution.
How long the track takes
For a monthly title: kits arrive in days, negotiation runs a week or two, and the space close typically sits one to three months before the on-sale date, so a decision made today usually prints two to four issues out. Weeklies compress everything. The calendar mechanics live in Step 05, and remnant buying in Step 04 is the exception that can put you in next month's book.
Before you start, benchmark the quote in hand on QuoteCheck and skim the master rate table so you know what the published paper says.
