Is print still effective?
The honest version of this page is shorter than the industry would like. Most recall and trust statistics circulating about magazine media trace to the MPA's Magazine Media Factbook and allied publisher research: real studies, professionally run, and funded by the people selling the pages.[1] That does not make them false. It makes them the industry's own case, and this desk labels them as such rather than laundering them into neutral-sounding facts.
What the evidence supports, read skeptically
- Attention quality is structurally real. A printed page is a single-tasking medium; no methodology dispute touches that. What publisher studies add, with their funding noted, is measurement of how that attention converts.[1]
- Trust claims are directionally consistent. Across years of surveys from multiple parties, print ads poll among the more-trusted formats. Exact rankings move with each survey's design, so the desk treats the direction as evidence and any specific percentage as a survey artifact.
- The negative case is also structural. Audiences shrank; the one published national card cut its own rate base 42% between its 2024 and 2026 kits.[2] Frequency is expensive, measurement is manual, and none of the trust matters if the title's readership was never your buyer.
Cheerleading, flagged
When you meet "magazines deliver the highest ROI of any medium" in a blog, walk the citation. It normally resolves to publisher-commissioned marketing-mix studies, summarized secondhand, vintage unstated. This site's rule for its own pages: structural claims argued openly, numeric claims sourced to the ledger, and publisher-funded material always labeled. If we cannot source it, we say so, as this page just did.
Setting an expectation for a first buy
Skip channel-level ROI folklore entirely. Price the specific buy: quote, audited circulation, your conversion economics. Decide the cost per response that repays within your window, instrument per Step 09, hold a monthly's window open 60 days past on-sale, and renew or kill on your own curve. One instrumented flight teaches more than every factbook printed.
Market numbers with vintages: statistics. Audience data: readership. What good creative does: examples.
