Magazine readership, measured honestly

Two different numbers describe every magazine's audience, and the gap between them funds a lot of optimistic media kits. Circulation counts copies, audited by AAM or BPA.[2] Total audience counts estimated readers: circulation times a readers-per-copy multiplier measured by syndicated research, principally MRI-Simmons in the US.[1] Both are legitimate. Only one is a count.

How the multiplier is made

MRI-Simmons surveys large consumer panels about which titles they read; from that, each title gets an average readers-per-copy figure, so a copy passed around a dentist's waiting room counts several readers.[1] The methodology is real research with known limitations: recall-based, sensitive to title recognition, and structurally generous to titles with public-place distribution. Which is why the multiplier differs wildly by title and why kits quote the flattering product, not the factors.

Which number a buyer should use

The desk's rule, stated once site-wide: negotiate and compute CPM on audited circulation; accept pass-along readers as unpriced upside. Rate cards themselves price against circulation-based rate bases (the published national example guarantees 1,400,000 copies, not readers[3]), so paying on total audience means paying twice for the multiplier. If a seller insists on total audience, make them show the multiplier and its source, then reprice at circulation on the CPM desk and watch the conversation improve.
