Section 2.1

Magazine ad sizes

Three measurements govern every print ad. Trim is the page's final cut size. Bleed is the extra image, conventionally an eighth of an inch, that runs past the trim so the cut never shows white. Live area is the inner safety zone where anything you cannot afford to lose must sit. Confuse them and the printer decides your layout.

Nomenclature is standard; dimensions are not. Every title publishes its own inch measurements in its spec sheet.

Why we print no inch table

Because there is no universal one. Trim sizes differ by title and change when publishers cut paper costs, and a dimensions table copied from a blog is how ads get rejected at materials close. The only authoritative dimensions are in the title's current media kit spec page[2], usually one PDF page listing every unit with trim, bleed and live measurements. Request it in Step 01, hand it to your designer unedited, and have them build to the PDF/X exchange standards the industry actually specifies.[1]

File-side requirements: artwork specs. What each unit costs: full, half, quarter. Briefing the designer: Step 08.
